Slumdog Millionaire
Today in class we finished watching Slum Dog Millionaire. I really enjoyed the movie, it was really interesting learning about Indian culture and the people. I thought it was really interesting how Salim killed himself in a bathtub full of money. It was one of the smartest things he did throughout the whole movie, it showed that he really cared about Latika and Jamaels happiness and their life together..

Today in class we still continued watching the India movie and as we continue to watch it, it becomes more and more emotional and sad about how their life was when they were little and how awful they were treated and the conditions they were in were not sanitary at all. I really like the movie and cant wait to watch the ending.

Differences between US and India
Difference between United States and India: Today we started watching a movie about life in Maubi India and how life there is much different then here in the United States and it really makes you realize how different it is and how lucky we are here to have freedom.
India:
Covered in trash
Bathing in rivers
trading for money
NO electricity
Getting food in piles of trash
Fighting and attacks
NO parents, they just wander around
Police torture kids and adults
Schools crowded
United States:
Have electricity
Showers and baths
go to food stores
wars using bombs
we have parents and guardians to watch over us
Police don't torture, and try to help us
Schools for the most part are comfortable

Culture
Today in class we started talking about culture and how it influences our lives from little. First we looked at a map of the United States and saw the different areas where people call soft drinks like... Coke, pop, soda, or other. It was really interesting to me because i thought that everyone just called it soda. But there are other names for it. We also talked about how our parents influence and teach us ways and we follow for the most part what they do, like religion and more. I'm interested to learn more about this unit.

Today in class we went over some of the facts that we found out about the leaders of each of the 12 countries for our project. I found out a lot of interesting facts, like Enrique Pena Nieto was married and had an affair with another women and had children with her. Also he won president mainly for his good looks. Another interesting fact is that Joachim Gauck doesn't run the country as much as Angela Markle, she is the chandler of Germany and has much control and power.

Review for test
Today in class we review for the test on Friday. We looked over the main terms that we will need to know, and we also reviewed some questions that will be on the test. Some questions that we will need to know are to find the rate of natural increase you subtract the death from birth. Net migration is emigration minus immigration. Developing countries are in the Pre-industrialization stages and Developed Countries are in Post-industrialization stage. Infrastructure is what a country needs to stay connected to the world.

Spotify
Today in class Mr. Schick gave everyone a password for Spotify, Spotify has started a program called pilot program and it is for schools around the United States to have music be apart of the curriculum. They are testing this out to see if it is actually beneficial. everyone gets a free 3 1/2 months with no commercials. Now that music is such a big part in everyone's lives, i think it will help students and personally make me work better knowing that i can relate a song to something I'm learning in school.

CIA World Factbook
Today in class we talked about whether the United States was the best place in the world to live or not. To help figure this out we talked more about the short clip we watched in class the other day and we took a look at the CIA World Factbook again. We used the cite to compare the united states to other places around the world to see if the U.S is really the best place. As i was looking through some of the statistics i found that their are other countries that are better than the United States, none of these countries are perfect but there are places other than the United States that we don't think about on a regular basis. Some of the facts surprised me a little, for example Mexico has more airport than the U.S, this is because many people vacation in Mexico. It will be interesting to watch how these number and rankings change over the years.

We also learned the Three stages are Pre- industrialization, Industrialization, and Post- industrialization. The united States is at stage three.

First Test
Today we got back our tests and reviewed them. I got an 89 on the test, i think i did pretty good. I could have made one of my short answers more detailed but other than that i think i did good. I liked that we could use our blogs for our first test, i think it helped a lot of people if they took good notes in class. That's another thing i could take more time to do, is take more notes to make my short answer responses more detailed.

population and Settlement day 2
Today in class we took some more time to review population and Settlement, we also moved on to talking about measuring population around the world. Some important terms that we learned are..
Crude Expectancy: the average number of births per 1000 of the population.
Crude death rate: number of deaths per 1000 of the population.
RNI: (rate of natural increases) Subtract death rate from birth rate
Net immigration rate: the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year.
-immigration=entering
-emigration= leaving
Some interesting facts i learned while looking at the CIA world factbook
-In Akrotiri there are approximately 15,700 people living there
-The languages spoken there are English and Greek
- They use the euro

Population and Settlement
Today we started talking about Population and Settlement. We talked about the tremendous growth in population in that past few years. Over 7 billion people are living on the planet right now and is increasing by over 73 million per year. In the next few years the population will still be increasing and we will start to get overcrowded in some part, there wont be enough supply to support all of these people. There is not even enough now to help people in Chad that don't have clean water or shelter. 90% of this population growth takes place in the developing countries of Africa, South and East Asia and Latin America. We also talked about the term Life Expectancy, life expectancy mean the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year. One thing that surprised me was that the United States is very low in this. People in the United States are dying younger cause of drugs and alcohol, bad diets, no/little exercise.

1st test
Today we took our first test in Human Geography, We got to use our blogs which helped. The test was pretty good, i think i did good on it, the only thing i would change is to take better notes in class and include them into my blogs to make them better. On today's test i felt that i had most of the information i needed except on like two questions. I think it was a good test to start out the year.

Day 8
Today was used as a review day in class, we talked about the four topics we have covered so far this unit which are, "A message to Garcia", Ancient Greece, Globalization, and the "Did You Know 3.0" video clip. We came up with some good test questions as we talked about all our topics. Then we talked about the future, and how much is going to change in the next few years of our lives. The main thing we talked about was the new Apple watch which is going to be like a wallet. You will no longer need cash nor credit cards or I'D's, everything will be on your watch.

Globalization
Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world, the results in expansion of international culture, economic, and political activities. Globalization has been happening for as long as we could remember, People traded products on the silk road. Now Globalization has is happening at a much faster rate, American company's are spreading throughout the world, for instants McDonald's and KFC are American owned company's and they are being spread to China. The logo's are the same but the style of the buildings are their architectural style. We also learned that BCE is Before Common Era, and BC is Before Christ.
Wednesday, September 10, 2014
Day 6
Today in class we talked more about the facts in the video from yesterday. Most of these facts surprised us all. Then we talked about how English is being spoken more in China and other countries because they can communicate with the U.S better and the can get jobs. One thing that i learned today was that the word "Okay" is used world wide, everyone understand the word "Okay". Lastly we talked about where most of our products are made. mostly all products used to be made in the U.S but now China is producing mostly all of them, because its so much cheaper to have products made there, the people work for less than Americans do.

"Did You Know?"
As i watched the "Did You Know?" video today i learned a lot of interesting facts that surprised me. The first thing that shocked me was that if Facebook were a country it would be the third largest. Facebook started off small and grew tremendously throughout a few years, knowing that, that many people are on Facebook even today surprises me because less people our age use it. The second fact is that Facebook is now available in 70 different languages. This shows how much Facebook has grown, more and more countries are using it, which shows all the different types of people that are using just one social media. The last fact is that there are 31 billion searches on Google every month, people use Google for everything. When people have a question they go right to Google, because they usually have the answer. All of these are because of technology. Technology has become a big part of our lives, we use it everyday in school, we don't know any different. These changes effect us, its showing us how much technology has become a part of our lives but its also shown me that's its kind of taken over our lives too, in a good and bad way. Throughout the video there were many facts but these were the three that stood out the most to me.

Day 5
Today in class we talked about "A message to Garcia" for a little while. We talked about how Rowan was in all the newspapers (written by Elbert Hubbard) and that ever boss wanted a worker like Rowan. They wanted people who didn't complain, worked hard, and did what they were told the first time. People now aren't looking for jobs or don't feel like going to work. "A message to Garcia" really knowledge's us about how it used to be. The second half of class we talked about Voting for election. The United States has the least amount of people voting (53%), compared to Peru(86%), Iran(75%), and Rwanda(89%). This shows that people aren't getting up and going to vote, like people in their 20's-30's, and people that are in their 70's-80's are the ones going to vote.

day 2
Today in human geo everyone sent their bogs in for the first half of class. Then we saw the syllabus for this course and we went over it. I learned that there is no extra credit given out during the course. Also Mr. Schick’s room is in the fine arts wing room 112, and if we ever have any questions to report to that room.
Day 4
Today in class we spent most of the time fixing our blogs. We learned more how to set up our links and how to fix our title for our pages. After we fixed our blogs we talked about the schedule for the year and where we can find it, along with the syllabus for the course, and the website for "A message to Garcia".
John Carroll
Five ways I can succeed at John Carroll are to stay organized, study, participate in class, ask questions, and be involved in school activities and sports. Staying organized will help me keep track of all assignments that are due and keep me motivated knowing that I have a system that works for me. Participating in class will help my grade and help me understand what I'm learning better if I'm engaged in class discussions. Asking Question when I'm confused will help understand what I'm learning better, so I can do better on tests and homework. Lastly, being involved in school activities and sports will help me meet new people and I can see all the school has to offer. If I can concentrate on the five things then I know I can succeed at John Carroll.

first day
My first day at John Carroll was really good, I met a lot of new people and the teachers were all really nice. Everyone was really friendly and helpful, I found all my classes and got there on time. My favorite thing about John Carroll is having the freedom to have off mods. This time allows me to socialize with friends, study and see and if I need any help in my classes I can go to my teachers for assistance. My goal for this year is to get involved in extracurricular activities and sports, it will give me a chance to meet some of the upper classmen. I'm grateful to be apart of the John Carroll class of 2018.
